Correctional Clinical Programs

The Clinical Services Department assists clinical staff in refining the delivery of correctional healthcare, providing resources and mentoring in the following:

    • Developing and implementing of treatment protocols and practices
    • Process improvements
    • Training and clinical mentoring
    • Risk management
    • Accreditation preparedness

In addition to providing clinical staff with valuable assistance, these efforts ultimately result in more consistent and higher quality patient care.

    Correctional nurse leadership

We take every opportunity to incorporate our nurses’ input into our business strategy and decision-making. Our Nurse Leadership Council (NLC) provides advice and direction for nursing issues. NLC members assist with implementation of clinical best practices, company-wide. In addition, they foster implementation of standardized processes and best practices, resulting in a high quality program of nursing and medical care delivery.

    Care management initiative

Care management is based on the assumption that concentrating on preventive care for at-risk populations, and disease management for certain high-risk populations will improve health outcomes and reduce off-site referrals. This “population-based” approach uses patient/population identification, clinical management using evidence-based treatment plans, education and resources, and outcome reporting.

Correctional Medical Services, Inc. (CMS) has piloted a Complex Case Management program with three state prison systems. In the first nine months, we improved:

    • Compliance with directions for medication by 50 percent
    • Compliance with dietary recommendations by 71 percent
    • Blood pressure control by 62 percent
    • HgbA1c (blood sugar) control by 86 percent

An additional outcome of this initiative has been a greater than 60 percent reduction in hospital admissions, shorter inpatient stays and reduced emergency room utilization.
