CMS Staff Complete More Than 1,300 eLearning Courses in 2009

Frontline and managerial staff at Correctional Medical Services, Inc. (CMS) sharpened their professional skills in 2009 by completing 1,336 eLearning courses via the company’s eLearning Learning Management System (LMS).

The system offers more than 200 online learning courses to its administrative and clinical managers across the country, and over 100 courses to frontline staff in nine states via dedicated eLearning kiosks in 22 field medical units.

Leading the company in LMS usage for the third year in a row is CMS’ Missouri Region.

Ralf Salke, Vice President of Operations in Missouri, is a proponent of the eLearning LMS and believes it plays a vital role in helping staff stay up-to-date on professional development topics and company procedures.

“The eLearning LMS gives our on-site staff and operators a chance to improve their knowledge base on multiple fronts, from business conduct, scheduling, staffing, and retention to name a few,” said Salk

Dawn Nelson, Health Services Administrator at Indiana State Prison in Indianapolis, completed 75 eLearning courses in 2009 and said she encourages her entire staff to take advantage of CMS’ online learning opportunities because she feels it is a valuable educational tool for professional development.

“I embrace the training and realize it is the building block for additional knowledge and job opportunities,” said Nelson.

Tari Fitzgerald, Director of Nursing at Boonville Correctional Center in Boonville, Missouri, appreciates that the online courses can be taken at the convenience of the employee, with the ability to start/stop/pause courses as needed. Fitzgerald says an employee can “look through the courses and know which courses meet your learning style, and if you get busy, bookmark your place in a course and come back to it when you can concentrate.”

The LMS system is a dynamic tool for continuing education, as well as personal and professional growth and development. CMS employee course offerings are highlighted to staff during orientation periods and through ongoing initiatives such as a “Course of the Week” feature and an annual Top Courses list.
