CMS Hosts Educational Workshop and Exhibit at National ACA Conference
February 18, 2010
Representatives of Correctional Medical Services, Inc. (CMS) were pleased to serve as educational presenters and exhibitors at the recent 2010 Winter Conference of the American Correctional Association (ACA), held January 22-27 in Tampa, Florida.
The ACA is the oldest and largest international correctional association in the world and is dedicated to promoting excellence in corrections.
Melanie Wahl, Director of Medical Resource Services, and Holly Mathis, Complex Case Manager, led an informative clinical workshop for attendees titled “Sudden Death in Custody Related to Acute Psychotic Delirium (APD)”. The session focused on recognizing the signs of APD and developing a collaborative action plan to address and manage the disease.
“Sudden Death in Custody is a topic that has implications for all colleagues in corrections, from the apprehending officer to the correctional and medical staff, including those in the local ER who will receive this patient in extremis,” said Mathis. “Recognizing and responding appropriately will significantly influence a positive outcome so we felt it was important to explore this topic and present best practices.”
CMS managers also hosted a company exhibit at the national conference, showcasing its comprehensive healthcare program for prisons and jails and how the organization has been able to deliver results and transparency to correctional medical programs for 30 years.
